Russell Wilson is getting used to a new team and city. And to make himself a better Steelers quarterback, he’s relying on an old training exercise.

That’s boxing. Wilson went back to the familiar with his high-profile boxing trainers. And the 35-year-old is sporting the same ripped biceps and six-pack abs of a rookie safety. No dad bod for this Steelers quarterback.

Wilson posted video of his last boxing session to his Instagram account. He also tossed in three photos to make it a gallery.

He explained via caption. “Back in the Ring. Started in 2018 through 2020. Had some of my best years. Then COVID hit in 2020 and couldn’t go back in. Good to see my guys again.”

If you pay attention to boxing, you’ll probably recognize Wilson’s trainer, Freddie Roach. The Steelers quarterback goes for the best around. Roach is a well-known trainer who worked with the likes of world champions Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Julio César Chávez Jr. Wilson also appeared with international trainer Marvin Somodio.

Wilson’s followers couldn’t look at the video and photos without commenting. One made reference to Wilson’s former team., writing “Pittsburgh Steelers. Sorry for your loss Broncos Fans.”

Another wrote “Bro, I swear we’re going 17-0 with you.”

Of course, Steelers fans care the most about Wilson’s ability to win football games. The quarterback’s career definitely is at a cross roads. He made the Pro Bowl nine times with the Seahawks, leading Seattle to two AFC titles with one Super Bowl championship.

Then, he forced a trade to the Broncos, where he didn’t look like the same quarterback. Denver management fired Nathaniel Hackett, the first head coach with Wilson. Then with Sean Payton in charge, the Broncos benched Wilson late last season, then released him this March.

The Steelers gladly picked up Wilson at a bargain price. The Broncos still owe Wilson a guaranteed $38 million for 2024, meaning the Steelers signed him for the NFL veteran minimum of $1.2 million.

Pittsburgh also traded for Justin Fields from the Bears as Chicago moved on to select Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick of the draft. The Steelers dealt Kenny Pickett, their starter for two seasons, to the Eagles.

Wilson will be 36 at mid-season. But with a new change in NFL scenery, he says he’s feeling the energy of his younger days in the league.

“Man, I feel the fountain of youth,” Wilson told reporters earlier this month during minicamp. “I feel revived in every way, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I feel confident. (And) I think at some point you have to know who you are as a player, as a man, as a competitor. As somebody who’s been fortunate to be able to play this game, I don’t doubt it. I trust it.”

He added: “I felt really good last year playing. I felt really confident in the midst of everything. And so I think right now I have all that confidence times 10.”

Wilson and the Steelers report to training camp July 24, so start your countdown to the season.
