Report: Steelers starting guard Isaac Seumalo leaves practice with injury, to undergo tests

The Pittsburgh Steelers were dealt some harsh news on Wednesday, as starting guard Isaac Seumalo left practice with an apparent injury, and he’ll undergo tests immediately.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the affliction: “Pittsburgh’s starting guard Isaac Seumalo left practice today with an apparent pectoral injury and is undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury, per sources.”
The offensive lineman joined the Steelers prior to the 2023 campaign, signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the franchise. Before his time in Pittsburgh, Seumalo played for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he helped the team win the Super Bowl before leaving.
In college, Seumalo was a member of the Oregon State Beavers. There, he became the first true freshman to start at center since Roger Levasa in 1978. Eventually, he was drafted in the third round, after putting together a tremendous career with the program.

Now, as Isaac Seumalo continues his NFL journey with the Steelers, he’ll seemingly be hampered by injuries to begin the 2024 campaign. Time will tell it lingers, or if Pittsburgh dodges a bullet here.
Pittsburgh Steelers name Russell Wilson starting QB
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced Wednesday that Russell Wilson will serve as the team’s starting quarterback in the Week 1 road contest against the Atlanta Falcons.
Wilson, 35, beat out Justin Fields in the competition to secure the QB1 duties. Wilson, who signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with the Steelers this offseason following his release from the Denver Broncos, came into training camp in the “pole position” over Fields, Tomlin previously said.

Fields, acquired from the Chicago Bears, ultimately didn’t do enough to supplant Wilson, with the Super Bowl champion’s experience winning out.
“Obviously, Russ’s résumé is a unique one in terms of length and success,” Tomlin said, via Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show. “That tends to play a factor in the decision making but not from a decision making’s perspective, it’s just fruit of his labor.
“He’s seen a lot, done a lot and I think it was reflected in the way he played and conducted himself.”
Tomlin called it a “difficult decision” to name Wilson the starter over Fields, though not in a negative way.
