It’s always good to own a healthy sense of self. But Steelers receiver George Pickens may not be living in football’s real world. How else do you explain his comments about the Pro Bowl?

Pickens enjoyed a nice rookie season. Heck, call it quality. The second-rounder from Georgia caught 52 passes for 801 yards and four touchdowns, playing in all 17 games last season. He posted the nice numbers even with a fellow rookie (Kenny Pickett) at quarterback. His catch total ranked third on the team and he was 81 behind Diontae Johnson in reception yardage.

So it didn’t make sense this past week when George Pickens, who did an interview with college2pro.com, talked about his goals for 2023.

“Year two goals are Pro Bowl, and I feel like last year I feel like I got snubbed, because there wasn’t a lot of guys in there at the Pro Bowl that excited me,” George Pickens said.

He looked ahead to playing in the Super Bowl. “The two bowls. A lot of RAC, run after catch. Two bowls for sure.”

So Pickens got snubbed. His words, not ours. Here’s who made the Pro Bowl from the AFC, the receivers who didn’t excite Pickens. Keenan Allen (Chargers), Ja’Marr Chase (Bengals), Stefon Diggs (Bills) and Tyreek Hill were the top four receivers at the Pro Bowl. George Pickens didn’t belong in that conversation. His yardage ranked 38th overall in the NFL and his 15.4 average was ninth. But he wasn’t in the top 50 for receptions. Those aren’t Pro Bowl numbers, even if you squint.

Bless Pickens’ heart, fans started mocking him on social media.

There was the fan who put everything into context by bringing the facts to the discussion. We need a marker and a digital whiteboard to scribble all this down.

“Ummmm Jaylen Waddle had 555 yards more than Pickens and double the touchdowns… and Waddle didn’t make the Pro Bowl because the AFC is deep with receivers.”

Or, you had this comment “what does snubbed even mean anymore? Pickens was 38th in yards and 72nd in receptions last year.” And another fan pointed out “not even top 5 in his division lol.”

And, of course you had the generic mocking comments. “Pickens got snubbed from the Pro Bowl the same way Brucie got snubbed from the starting QB role.” Yes, that was a throwback to the classic football movie “The Longest Yard.”

Truthfully, George Pickens probably didn’t think his Pro Bowl snub comments would blow up like they did. But it’s the off-season. If fans can’t watch football, they’ll certainly talk about it.
