Stephen A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe question if Bill Belichick should deal with 'headache' of Jerry Jones
The Dallas Cowboys stunned the Washington Commanders on Sunday to improve to 4-7 on the year. Despite that, Mike McCarthy still appears to be in a lot of trouble in his fifth season in Dallas. If Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are indeed looking for a new head coach in a few months, Bill Belichick certainly seems like an option that could make sense.
Belichick has won six Super Bowls and is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time. ESPN personalities Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe spoke on First Take Monday about whether or not Bill Belichick and Jerry Jones would be a good fit.
“Jerry Jones can be a distraction and be a headache because he always has something to say on talk radio, postgame locker room and all of this stuff,” Stephen A. Smith said. “But the flip side is, the level of accountability that you have to have on a day-to-day basis is ultimately decided by somebody the caliber of a Bill Belichick.
“He will get those players to perform. It might be a headache with him with Jerry, and that’s not going to work long-term. But in terms of the guys out there on the field, they know who they’ve got to look at and who they’ve got to answer to.”
Stephen A. Smith believes the relationship could work. However, Shannon Sharpe isn’t so sure. According to Sharpe, Bill Belichick is a bigger draw than Jerry Jones, and that would bother the Cowboys owner.

“When you’re trying to win championships, you have one voice, one sound resonated. Bill Belichick is a bigger draw than Jerry Jones. That’s why he has coaches that he can overshadow. He couldn’t overshadow Jimmy [Johnson]. He couldn’t overshadow Bill Parcells. He can’t overshadow them because those guys won before him,” Sharpe said
“When you’re trying to win championships, you need one voice talking for everybody. If you bring Bill Belichick in, you’re not trying to be respectable. You’re trying to win a championship. And what has Jerry Jones religiously done? He’s undermined every head coach’s authority since Jimmy.”
The Dallas Cowboys last won a Super Bowl in 1995, and they have experienced plenty of tough moments and years since. Perhaps Jerry Jones will hire Bill Belichick and try to bring the Cowboys a Super Bowl for the first time in 30 years. Shannon Sharpe and Stephen A. Smith have differing opinions on whether that move would work out.
