Stephen Jones knows the Dallas Cowboys need to do more when they reach the playoffs. While appearing on The Athletic’s Scoop City, the Cowboys chief operating officer and co-owner shared his thoughts on the team’s playoff record the last three years.

“I think at the end of the day, a lot of people want to somewhat be critical of the organization of Jerry [Jones] and myself, Coach [Mike] McCarthy of our team, and of course, Dak [Prescott] being the quarterback gets the brunt of it of our success in the playoffs,” Stephen Jones said.

“At the same time, you gotta certainly recognize that we’ve won 36 regular season games in three years, which of course we’re playing 17 games. The Patriots may have done that, doing it in 16 games on a three-year run. But we’re having really great success in the regular season. There’s no question, I understand the criticism from our fans, I understand criticism from media, we all understand that in terms of not winning the big game in the playoffs.

“We certainly got to take that next step. I know we could go out there and no one’s assuming anything and have another great regular season. And, they shouldn’t, no one’s going to give… ‘Hey, they’re going to get it done this time until they see it.’ We understand that, we put ourselves in that position with our playoff-winning percentage. We do have to take that next step, but I certainly believe we can do it.”

In the last three seasons, the Cowboys have gone 12-5 and have won two NFC East titles. But when it comes to the playoffs, Dallas has won just one postseason game. The team has not played in an NFC title game since the 1995 Super Bowl win.

Will the Dallas Cowboys get over the playoff hump in 2024?

Following the end of the 2023 season, Jerry Jones explained why the 2024 season will be different in terms of a playoff run. “What I would say is, I hope it’s not different going into the first playoff game where we’ve got the second seed,” Jones said. “Now, when we play in that game, we need to stop the run better, and be more physical and we need to run better.”

While fans are hoping for big things this upcoming season, they are hoping that the Cowboys’ star players get new contracts. Prescott, Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb are three Cowboys that are seeking new deals.
