The Dallas Cowboys are a supremely talented bunch, with aspirations of hoisting their first Lombardi Trophy since 1996.

And if you take it from team executive vice president Stephen Jones, the 2023 version of the Cowboys just may be the deepest roster the franchise has ever assembled. Yes, that would include the Cowboys of the 90s, which won three Super Bowls led by Pro Football Hall of Famers Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin.

“I think this is as deep a team as we’ve ever had,” Jones said Tuesday, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “There’s no question it’s going to be the hardest 53 cut that we’ve had in years and years.”

Stephen Jones’ opinion would appear to be echoed by team owner Jerry Jones, who said he feels great about the Cowboys’ roster ahead of the cutdown from 90 to 53.

“I really like our group,” Jones said, via the team’s website. “We all know that the other teams that we’re going to be playing have done some good things, too, out here. And so we’ve talked about how good your team is. It’s got to be in comparison to who your competition is but, relative to them, I feel great.”

While the Cowboys have players all over its roster, the offensive side of the ball is where their talent shines through the most. A top-five scoring offense from a year ago, Dallas returns its core pieces in quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Tony Pollard, receiver CeeDee Lamb and offensive lineman Zack Martin among others. Additionally, the Cowboys made a major splash this offseason, acquiring veteran wideout Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans.

Will Cowboys make one more major addition to potent offense?

But will the Cowboys make another addition to their already potent offense? Jones addressed the question, specifically as it relates to Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, whom the Colts granted permission to seek a trade. While Jones didn’t outright dismiss it, he emphasized he’s very comfortable in his backfield group led by Pollard.

“I look at every opportunity,” Jones said. “We, obviously, if you look at all the free agents that are here, then you realize that you don’t have the ability and resources to make that happen. So, you have to be judicious with your choice of what’s best for you. The way our young backs are playing, and some of the good things they’ve done here [in camp and the preseason], I’m very comfortable with where we are with our backs right now.

“So, without getting into specifically, I think we saw some good things the other night. We’ve seen some good things in training camp. I feel good about our running back position if we didn’t add anybody.”
