Sean McVay: Rams 'still in evaluation mode' on Stetson Bennett as QB2 during Jimmy Garoppolo suspension
For the first two weeks of the season, the Los Angeles Rams have a quarterback question. No, it’s not about Matthew Stafford – it’s about his backup.
Jimmy Garoppolo will miss Week 1 and Week 2 as he serves a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. That means the Rams need a primary backup for Stafford for two games. Enter Stetson Bennett, fresh off an up-and-down performance in last week’s preseason game.
According to Sean McVay, the Rams still need to see more out of Bennett during the preseason. If he can prove himself, the former Georgia star could become Los Angeles’ QB2 out of the gate behind his fellow Bulldog.
“Yeah, I think we still have to be able to see some more body of work,” McVay said, via Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “What I did like was what I mentioned to you … to be able to stay together. That’s a tough deal when you have the ball [and] when you turn it over a handful of times. It was [a tough situation]. He kind of mentioned it in the postgame [interviews] to you guys where he thought he was seeing some things and then the mistakes ended up being pretty costly but he just kept playing. He kept fighting. The guys kept believing around him. I was really impressed with the resilience that he demonstrated.
“We do need to take better care of the football. That’s a very important thing. All of those are very correctable and really in a lot of them, it’s not necessarily with the exception … well, a couple of them were bad decisions and then a couple of them were just missed the way that you want to throw … make the type of layered throw. but you’re going to the right spot. [These are] all things that we can learn from. He has to continue to improve and we’re still in evaluation mode.”

Bennett had an interesting day in the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys last week. He completed 24 of 38 passes for 224 yards, but threw for interceptions. However, he found some magic in the fourth quarter, finding Miller Forristall for the game-winning touchdown.
Afterward, Stetson Bennett assessed the game as a whole. He put it in a class of its own – even beyond the games he played at Georgia.
“That was probably the weirdest game that I’ve been a part of,” Bennett told reporters after the game. “But I told myself (Sunday) we’re gonna roll with the punches. My goal was to not make any mental errors. It was basically to run the offense correctly.”
