Steve, Brian Belichick offered opportunity to stay with New England Patriots
After 24 years together, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots finally parted ways. Now, there are questions about where he’ll end up next. The Patriots, meanwhile, quickly moved on and hired defensive assistant Jerod Mayo to be the team’s next head coach.
However, this change also led to a question about Belichick’s sons, Steve and Brian, who were on the Patriots staff.
Ultimately, their status remains up in the air moving forward. After all, their father is expected to get a new job and they may want to join him there. However, if they’re happy in New England, it looks like the opportunity to stay on the staff there will also be available.
According to Albert Breer of SI.com, new head coach Jerod Mayo has offered both Steve and Brian the option to return to the staff in 2024.
Steve Belichick has been the Patriots’ defensive playcaller. That side of the ball, for all of the issues that New England has had including numerous defensive injuries, remained strong until the end of Bill Belichick’s tenure and while Steve was the play caller. Brian, meanwhile, has been coaching the safeties.
Jerod Mayo and Steve Belichick have grown close over the years. After all, Mayo was a star on New England’s defense before becoming a defensive assistant in 2019. Steve has been a defensive assistant going back to 2012 when Mayo was still playing. So, it might be a little awkward to work for his father’s successor but the pair already have a good relationship.

For his part, Brian Belichick has been working for the Patriots since 2016 and has been the safeties coach since 2020. So, he and Mayo have worked together for several years as well.
Adam Schefter evaluates how Bill Belichick would fit with Dallas Cowboys
There are a lot of questions about where Bill Belichick could end up coaching and, after the Dallas Cowboys lost in the playoffs, many started suggesting firing Mike McCarthy to go hire Bill Belichick. That was an idea that NFL insider Adam Schefter evaluated on Get Up.
“Bill Belichick wants to coach football. If it happened to be in Dallas, if Dallas made the move and Jerry said to Bill, ‘I wanted you to come coach the Cowboys,’ I think Bill would be good with the setup that would be there. I don’t think he’s going to go in and say, ‘Well you all step aside, I’m gonna run this whole thing, or I’m not coming.’ I don’t think it’ll be like that,” Schefter said.
“Listen, what did Bill Belichick say exactly one week ago in the press conference in New England? One week ago he told the reporters there, ‘I don’t have to make all the personnel decisions. I can give up some control.’ He told that to them. That was before they parted ways this week. If an opportunity like Dallas were to come along, and he were interested in it, I think he would be willing to collaborate in any way it took.”
