A battle for CB1 has taken place throughout the draft process. Toledo‘s Quinyon Mitchell is fighting hard for the spot, with Terrion Arnold of Alabama right there with him. Their respective stocks have been moving lately and one has pulled into pole position.

Jim Nagy of the Senior Bowl loves what he has seen from Mitchell, both in Mobile and Indianapolis. He might be a Group of Five guy but proved he can compete with some top receivers. His stock was already on the rise.

“He’s checked every box,” Nagy said during Tuesday’s episode of Andy Staples On3. “He’s taken advantage of the full process as much as anyone could. He had a great week (at the Senior Bowl) covering really great receivers. I mean, he was in there day in and day out with Roman Wilson from Michigan and Ricky Pearsall from Florida. Guys that blew up the Combine as well.”

Thanks to the Senior Bowl, Mitchell was already highly regarded by those at the NFL level. Nagy had him slotted as one of the top two corners in the class alongside Arnold. Heading into Indianapolis, those two were competing for the top spot at the position.

Due to the 40-yard dash times, Mitchell is solidified as the first corner off the board. Yes, Arnold will have another opportunity to run at the Alabama Pro Day but the difference between the two at the Combine is substantial enough for teams to elevate Mitchell in Nagy’s eyes.

“Heading into Indy, most teams were in the place of Terrion Arnold from Alabama and Quinyon Mitchell probably being the top two corners,” Nagy said. “Now, Terrion Arnold ran 4.50, which isn’t a bad time. But 4.33, you’re talking about a difference of .2. That’s significant. For two players that were close, that’s a big separator.”

In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports, Mitchell was selected No. 13 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders, while Arnold went No. 15 to the Indianapolis Colts. Teams are still going to value cornerbacks in the draft. Clemson‘s Nate Wiggins is another potential first-rounder, running the second-fastest 40-yard dash at the Combine at 4.28.

But with Mitchell likely not running again at the Toldeo Pro Day, NFL teams have all the needed information on the Toledo product. And it might be good enough to hear his name called by Commissioner Roger Goodell ahead of every other cornerback in Detroit.
