Super Bowl LVIII will feature first-time host city in 2024

For the first time ever, Las Vegas is set to be the host city for the Super Bowl. After a scheduling conflict forced New Orleans out as the host for Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, Las Vegas will be the replacement, the Review-Journal reports.

An official announcement is expected on Wednesday when the league’s owners meet in Dallas.

The addition of a 17th game to the NFL schedule pushed the date for the Super Bowl LVIII back a week. As a result, it will occur the same time as New Orleans’ annual Mardi Gras celebration, which is why the city was unable to honor its commitment to hosting.

Instead, New Orleans is set to host the Super Bowl the following year in 2025.

The Raiders moved from Oakland to Las Vegas beginning in the 2020 season, opening the door for the city to become one of the NFL’s newest prime destinations. Las Vegas is also scheduled to host this season’s Pro Bowl on Feb. 6 and the NFL draft from April 28 to 30th.

Las Vegas put together an ambitious and multi-leveled plan to convince NFL owners of its viability to accommodate the biggest yearly sporting event in North America. The city’s reputation as one of the entertainment capitals of the world coupled with the necessary hotel, convention center and activation space were convincing arguments in luring the event to Southern Nevada.

Hosting a Super Bowl makes good on a pledge made by the Raiders and the NFL that Nevada stepping up as a partner in the building of Allegiant Stadium would transform Las Vegas into one of the top destinations for big-time sports and entertainment events.

Nevada pitched in $750 million to the $2 billion project, with the state’s financing coming from revenue generated by a 0.88 percent local hotel occupancy room tax.

Outside of the NFL, Vegas hosts the NBA’s Summer League each year. It is also home to the NHL’s Las Vegas Knights, an expansion team founded in 2017.

This season’s Super Bowl will be played on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The 2023 Super Bowl will have a host city of Glendale, Arizona.
