Tampa Bay Buccaneers announce it has completed interview with Georgia OC Todd Monken

After helping Georgia win a second straight national championship, Bulldog OC Todd Monken has been a hot commodity when it comes to the coaching carousel. That includes the NFL as much as it does college because, as of today, he has officially interviewed with one of his suitors.

Per the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they tweeted that they had completed their interview of Monken for the same position he held in Athens. It would also be the same position he had in Tampa Bay back from 2016-2018.

Monken came to Georgia and was a big part of them being the first time in the College Football Playoff era to go back to back. Over the two championship years, the Bulldog offense averaged 472.1 yards per game and scored just a hair under 40 points per game. Their defense gets a ton of love but, when you look at the numbers, Monken’s offense was another to key to this run of dominance from the ‘Dogs.

In his three seasons with Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers were a successful offense, specifically in the air. In total, they averaged 22.6 points per game on 279.5 passing yards per game with Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick playing quarterback.

There’s no guarantee Monken would get to coach Tom Brady if he took the job. There’s actually no guarantee he lands in Tampa Bay either. Still, considering the connection, Monken’s recent success, and an open spot on the staff that used to belong to Byron Leftwich, this is a development at least worth keeping an eye on.

McElroy says Todd Monken has ‘NFL pedigree’

Georgia could be looking at a big change this offseason as offensive coordinator Todd Monken interviews for multiple NFL openings. It could be a difficult decision considering his background, according to ESPN analyst Greg McElroy.

McElroy had high praise for Monken, saying he has “NFL pedigree” that could make things interesting as he goes through the interviews. He has interviews lined up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens so far, and McElroy said there might be an allure to the NFL because of the college coaching lifestyle.

“He has NFL pedigree,” McElroy said. “This is a guy that has been with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he’s been the coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he’s been with the Cleveland Browns. He’s been around the NFL in the past, and I really think he’s probably going to have a difficult decision to make because I think NFL teams, they definitely want him.

“Now, does he want to stick with Georgia? Or does he want to go to the NFL where the lifestyle and the quality of life is better than that of college? In college, you’re recruiting all the time. It’s a difficult gig, for sure. So if you can call plays up there in the show, most people would take advantage of that. But it’ll be interesting.”
