Team USA trio Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman announce 'Triple Espresso' nickname
Team USA’s women’s soccer team has been excelling in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, most recently defeating Germany 1-0 on Tuesday to advance to a matchup against Brazil this Saturday, August 10 where an Olympic gold medal will be on the line.
The trio of Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Trinity Rodman have been integral in Team USA’s recent success. Providing goal scoring and energy to their team that’s fueled an impressive run during the Summer Games.
The energetic trio is worthy of a fitting nickname, which they recently announced during an appearance on The Today Show to Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb. Unveiling that from now on they should be referred to as ‘Triple Espresso’.
“We also have a name for ourselves. We have an announcement,” Smith said. “Trinity, take it away.”
“We have a proposal for our trio name to be ‘Triple Espresso.’ So we’re going to put that out into the air and let people run with that, because we like that as well,” Rodman announced.
The trio has already been referred to as ‘The Trident’ and ‘Holy Trinity’, but now they’ve given themselves a nickname that definitely suits them. Bringing an elevated level of youth and energy to a veteran Team USA squad led by new head coach Emma Hayes.

Swanson, 26, Smith, 23, and Rodman, 22, may be young, but their past experience playing for their country has primed them for breakout performances in this year’s Olympics. With Smith and Rodman both playing on Team USA’s 2023 World Cup Team and Swanson being called up to the senior national team at the age of 17 back in 2016. Becoming the youngest player called up to the team in 15 years.
Triple Espresso has made its mark in Paris after Team USA took home the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. With Rodman scoring a clutch goal in extra time against Japan to secure a 1-0 win and advance the U.S. team to the semifinals. Where the trio would come up big again with Swanson assisting on a goal by Smith (on her birthday) in extra time against Germany for yet another 1-0 win that would this time advance America to the gold medal finals.
“Honestly, I just saw a little opening in the net and knew that I had to put the ball there and do that for our team,” Smith said. “I feel like I don’t remember a lot that happened, it all happened so fast, but Mal played an absolutely perfect pass, and I knew I just had to get on the end of it.”
The trio will look to keep the energy high and deliver Team USA with their fifth gold medal in women’s soccer this Saturday. Taking on Brazil at 11 a.m. ET in a final airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
