Report: Teams could inquire about trade for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported other NFL teams could call the Pittsburgh Steelers and inquire about a trade for Mike Tomlin.
The rare coaching trade might be on the table, but Schefter didn’t believe the Steelers would ultimately want to pull the trigger. But that doesn’t mean teams won’t try and see what Tomlin would command in a trade.
After going 10-3, Pittsburgh lost their final four games of the season to fall to the AFC Wild Card next week.
“I think that there are going to be teams out there that have watched the way that the Pittsburgh Steelers season has ended and wonder whether they should call the Steelers to see if they should inquire about whether the Steelers would be willing to move on from Mike Tomlin and move to another organization,” Schefter said on Sunday NFL Countdown.
“I don’t think Pittsburgh will do that. That has not been what they’ve been about, and there’s no indication that they would. But I do think there are teams wondering whether they should lob in a call, just to see if they could stir Pittsburgh’s interest.”
Tomlin is under contract through the 2027 season, based on a contract extension signed in 2024. However, the Steelers’ coach downplayed the meaning of that extension.

“To be quite honest with you, it just means I don’t have to field questions about it,”Tomlin said. “I’ve seen more days than I am going to see on this job, man. I’m focused on 2024 and have been and that’s my mindset … “Again, I don’t focus on what’s in my rearview. If there’s a secret, the secret is I’m focused on the challenges and tasks at hand and not my resume. I could care less about my resume.”
Tomlin’s been the head coach in Pittsburgh since 2007, going 183-107-2 to date. He won Super Bowl XLIII during his second year as head coach and led the Steelers to Super Bowl XLV two years later.
Despite eight playoff appearances since then, not including this year’s upcoming postseason, Tomlin hasn’t been back to a Super Bowl and made the AFC Championship just once (2016), a loss to the New England Patriots.
The Steelers are currently in line to play at the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the playoffs, although that could change Sunday if the Chargers lose and then Pittsburgh would go to Houston next week.
