According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers have traded for quarterback Malik Willis. In return, the Tennessee Titans will be receiving a seventh-round pick for next year’s 2025 NFL Draft.

Schefter adds Willis is likely to backup Jordan Love this season. Green Bay had a couple of other young quarterbacks on the roster — most notably this year’s seventh-round pick Michael Pratt out of Tulane. But they felt the need to look outside the organization to find Love’s backup.

“QB trade: Titans are sending QB Malik Willis to the Packers in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick, per sources,” Schefter said via X. “Willis is likely to back up Jordan Love.”

Willis is entering his third season in the NFL after being a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Liberty. Tennessee did give him an opportunity to play as a rookie, playing in eight games and starting three of them. Just one win came from the starts.

Eleven total games are on Willis’ resume, throwing for 350 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions. There was some success on the ground as a dual-threat guy, rushing for 144 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries.

Tennessee will be rocking with second-year player Will Levis as the starting quarterback. Veteran Mason Rudolph joined the franchise this offseason, bringing some experience to the room just in case there are injury problems. Willis most likely would have been the third-string but instead heads to the Packers.

Big things are expected out of Love this season, especially fresh off his contract extension. Green Bay has invested a lot of time in Love after selecting him in the first round while Aaron Rodgers was still on the roster. If he is healthy, there will not even be a thought of taking him off the field.

Willis will be right behind him though, waiting in case the opportunity arises. Head coach Matt LaFleur might just have another developmental project on his hands with Monday’s reported trade.

Green Bay will begin to 2024 season abroad, facing the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. There will be a reunion game for Willis, as the Packers travel to Nashville on Sept. 22, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
