Texans DB Calen Bullock addresses hit on Dolphins WR Grant DuBose, suspension concerns
Houston Texans (9-5) safety Calen Bullock said he did not intend to hurt Grant DuBose on the hit that resulted in the Miami Dolphins (6-8) receiver being transported to a local hospital.
“My intentions was never to go out and hurt nobody, that’s never any of our intention. So, prayers out to him and his family. I hope he’s good. I was breaking on the ball,” Bullock said after Houston’s 20-12 victory, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. “And it just happened to be one of those type of plays.”
DuBose suffered a head injury in the third quarter on a play where Bullock made direct helmet-to-helmet contact. DuBose, activated off injured reserve to make his third appearance of the season, stayed on the field for a significant amount of time as medical personnel tended to him. DuBose’s jersey had to be cut off and his facemask unscrewed as both teams huddled and prayed around him. A neck brace was placed around DuBose’s head, and the 23-year-old was taken away in an ambulance.
Head coach Mike McDaniel said the team has received “positive feedback” on DuBose’s health status after he underwent head and neck imaging, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. He will remain at the hospital overnight, McDaniel said.

Calen Bullock speaks out on hit that hospitalized Grant DuBose
Bullock said he is not concerned about potentially receiving a suspension for the hit, which came with a penalty for unnecessary roughness. The NFL issued Bullock’s teammate, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, a three-game suspension earlier this month for the late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars (3-11) linebacker Trevor Lawrence.
“No, not really,” Bullock said. “My intention was never to go out there and just try to completely take someone out of the game and hurt somebody.”
Miami claimed DuBose, a 2023 seventh-round selection of the Green Bay Packers (9-4), off waivers on Aug. 28. Before entering the NFL, DuBose was a star at Charlotte. In two seasons with the 49ers, he hauled in 126 receptions for 1,684 yards and 15 touchdowns.
