Texans QBs coach Jerrod Johnson informs teams he's returning to Houston in 2024

Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, one of the hottest offensive coordinator candidates this cycle, has informed teams he’s returning to Houston in 2024, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Johnson, 35, will stay in Houston to build off a successful 2023 campaign, in which the Texans won their first playoff game since 2019. Under his tutelage, quarterback CJ Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons by a signal-caller in NFL history and is the frontrunner for the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award. Stroud finished with 4,108 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions and a passer rating of 100.8.
Johnson’s rise through the coaching ranks has been meteoric, as he began his coaching career with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity coaching fellowship. In 2020, the Indianapolis Colts promoted him to offensive quality control coach. After spending two seasons in Indianapolis, he landed an assistant quarterbacks coaching gig with the Minnesota Vikings. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, who spent time with Johnson in San Francisco, hired him away from Minnesota ahead of the 2023 season.
Prior to getting into coaching, Johnson spent seven years as a quarterback in the NFL and UFL. Johnson’s professional playing career came to be after four highly successful seasons at Texas A&M. He is currently second in school history in passing yards behind only Kellen Mond.

Texans keep continuity by retaining Jerrod Johnson
With offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik likely to be one of the top head coaching candidates in 2025, Johnson could very well get a shot at calling plays in Houston in the future. Stroud, who’s known Johnson since he was 16, would certainly be in favor of that.
“Jerrod’s one thing for me was ‘Be confident.’ At that time, I wasn’t really the highest recruit,” Stroud recently said. “I wasn’t who I would become. I always knew that it would be a possibility, but I didn’t hear those types of drives. Jerrod’s someone I looked up to. When he was like, ‘Man, you need to be more confident,’ it changed my life. Fast forward, I’m here with him my rookie year. It’s a blessing to work with him. Whatever happens, I’m excited for him, and he deserves everything that’s coming for him.”
