WATCH: Texans score late touchdown, two-point conversion to lose out on No. 1 overall pick
To earn the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, all the Houston Texans needed to do was lose their final game against the Indianapolis Colts. However, with several jobs potentially on the line in H-Town, they made a statement instead by going for the win in Indianapolis.
With a touchdown pass from Davis Mills to Jordan Akins as well as a two-point conversion between the two, Houston took a 32-31 lead inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Sam Ehlinger wasn’t able to respond on the other side for Indianapolis and, now, the Chicago Bears will pick first overall come the NFL Draft.
Houston had two more likely scenarios in order to potentially earn the top pick. They either needed to lose today or have the Bears win against the Minnesota Vikings. As for Chicago, their path was a little more complicated as they needed to lose against Minnesota and for the the Texans to win.
With so much on the line for the draft and the playoffs in the final week of the regular season, seeing this race unfold live came down to the wire. In the end, though, Houston took the win over the pick, which will now belong to the Bears as they’re now on the clock from now until April 27th in Kansas City.
