Texas A&M has been pretty successful in Year 1 under Mike Elko, a bit of a contrast to Hugh Freeze at Auburn lately. But the Aggies got smacked by the South Carolina Gamecocks 44-20 the other week.

With that, Elko made a statement, saying they can’t play like that again if they expect to win any games.
“Hats off to South Carolina,” Elko said. “They beat us. Beat us on the line of scrimmage, both sides of the ball. Controlled the game. Forced turnovers. Couldn’t run the ball. Couldn’t tackle. Couldn’t control the quarterback. So, we didn’t do any of the things you need to do to win a football game. That’s why we lost. So, we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to fix them and we’ve got to not ever play like that again.”
There’s a little more confidence in Elko at Texas A&M than Freeze at Auburn at the moment. Freeze was honest about raising the confidence of his own fan base.
“I think it’s vital that we compete,” Freeze said. “That’s the expectation and, certainly, that’s the goal. Give ourselves a chance to win these football games against good football teams that we have to play to help build momentum, and you say, and confidence in everybody that we’re headed in the right direction, regardless of the record …
“Recruiting is big, too. To try to finish strong and continue to get the ‘25 class to understand that we’re not far off, and we need their help to come in and help us continue this build.”
