Securing Wyatt Langford with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft felt like a steal for the Texas Rangers. Langford was fresh off an incredible season with the Florida Gators and was considered a top-three prospect. However, when the Minnesota Twins took high schooler Max Clark at No. 3, Texas swooped in and grabbed their man.

Even so, things have already gone better than the Rangers could have ever imagined. On Tuesday, Langford received his third promotion since being drafted. He will now play for AAA Round Rock after a short stint in AA Frisco. An impressive rise and the outfielder finds himself just one step away from the Majors.

“The Texas Rangers announced OF Wyatt Langford was promoted from the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders to the Triple-A Round Rock Express on Tuesday afternoon,” a statement from the Round Rock Express said. “According to MLB.com, Langford is the No. 2 prospect for Texas and the No. 13 prospect in all of baseball. He was the fourth overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft.”

Langford has played 39 games in the Minor Leagues, having a .359 batting average. The power has been shown with an OPS of 1.168, 14 doubles, two triples, and 10 home runs. Runners have been on the bases for him as well, with Langford earning 29 RBIs.

His plate discipline has been fantastic as well, walking 30 times and striking out on just 28 occasions.

Round Rock has six games remaining on their 2023 schedule, with all taking place in Tacoma, the AAA club of the Seattle Mariners. Langford will have another opportunity to prove why he should be playing in the Majors sooner rather than later.

Wyatt Langford one step away from Texas Rangers call-up

One more call-up for Langford would mean he is a Major League player. There have been some fast tracks for players over the years, even with the Los Angeles Angels calling up their first-round pick of the 2023 Draft this season, first basemen Nolan Schanuel.

The Rangers have not publicly released their plans for Langford. By the time Round Rock’s six games are finished, just seven games will remain on the Major League schedule. An impressive showing could see a promotion to the main ballclub and attempt to help them make the MLB Playoffs.

Even if Langford closes out the 2023 season in the Minor Leagues, he will have the opportunity to earn an Opening Day roster spot next year.
