Texas vs. Clemson odds: Early betting line released for College Football Playoff matchup
No. 5 seed Texas will host No. 12 seed Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoff, and it didn’t take long for the early odds to be released.
After selection Sunday, Texas (-430) has opened as an 11.5-point betting favorite over Clemson (+330), according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under point spread is set at 54.5.
Everything fell perfectly into place for the three-loss Tigers after dropping their Week 14 matchup against South Carolina. A Miami loss pushed Clemson into the ACC Championship, and after fending off a late SMU rally in the conference title game, Clemson kicked its way into a guaranteed position in the CFP.
For Texas, they missed out on a first-round bye after losing to Georgia in overtime during Saturday’s SEC Championship mathup. At No. 3 in the final CFP Top 25, the Longhorns are the highest-ranked team to not have a first-round bye.

This will be a first-time matchup between the Longhorns and Tigers. Both teams have previous College Football Playoff experience but never crossed paths there, or any time during the regular season in the past.
2023 was the first time Texas appeared in the playoff, earning their spot in the final four-team playoff. They weren’t able to make it past Michael Penix Jr. and Washington in the national semifinal, but set the stage for a strong 2024 season entering the SEC.
For Clemson, this is the Tigers seventh College Football Playoff under head coach Dabo Swinney. The Tigers made the CFP championship game in four of five years between the 2015 and 2019 seasons, and went on to win the national championship both in 2016 and 2018.
Now, these two storied programs will meet in the first round of the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The winner will play No. 4 seed Arizona State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day.
