Thad Moffitt continuing Petty family legacy, will drive for Faction 46 in Truck Series
Just in time for the 75th anniversary of Petty family racing in NASCAR, Thad Moffitt is going full-time in the Truck Series with Faction 46. The newest Craftsman Truck Series team is going with the next generation of Petty racers to fill its seat.
Thad Moffitt is set to drive the No. 46 truck. With GMS Racing coming to an end, that tradition could not carry on. However, Moffitt is going to be suiting up full-time in this ride. Moffitt used to race the No. 46 in the ARCA Menards Series. He has a number of top-10 and top-5 finishes.
Moffitt suited up in the Truck Series four times previously, all coming in 2022. He has a best finish of P18 in the series, coming at Daytona for Reaume Brothers Racing in the 43 truck.
A new team, new season, but the same old Petty family. Thad Moffitt continues the legacy.
For those that care about manufacturer alliances, Faction 46 is a Chevy team as they are paired with Niece Motorsports. Based on how Niece performed a year ago, there should be some hope that Moffitt has good equipment for 2024.
On the Faction 46 website, the team says, “Thad is prepared to carry on the Petty legacy as the first full-time driver for the Faction 46 NASCAR Truck Series team.”
While he doesn’t have the “Petty” name, he’s got all of the legacy behind him. So, what do we expect from the 23-year-old driver in 2024?

Thad Moffitt taking on the Craftsman Truck Series
While Thad Moffitt hasn’t raced full-time in NASCAR yet, he’s got some experience. As I mentioned before, he has been in a handful of truck races. However, his real experience comes from the ARCA Menards Series and the Trans Am series.
In 2023, Moffitt was very low-key. I hope that means he’s been working on his race craft and doing the work, because the Truck Series is cutthroat. This year alone, we have two of the top drivers in the series making the leap straight to the Cup Series in Carson Hocevar and Zane Smith.
With how much similarity the Truck and Cup Series vehicles are right now, it’s a big deal. Let’s also not forget that each week Moffitt will be racing drivers desperate to prove themselves, desperate to move up to the higher series.
It is hard to say what we should expect from Moffitt. He’s young, he’s shown promise in ARCA – that’s about it. The Trans Am racing has been good for some other young talents recently. We’ll see if Moffitt can translate that experience to the Craftsman Truck Series. Should be an interesting season for Faction 46 all around.
