Theo Johnson believes he has a 'super high ceiling' with Giants
Earlier in April, the New York Giants selected former Penn State tight end Theo Johnson in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, making his professional football dream come true.
Immediately, Giants fans and media members alike began to rave about Johnson’s potential. While he showed why he was an interesting prospect with the Nittany Lions, many believe he hasn’t even come close to making good on his abilities, and it’s evident the former Penn State star agrees with that sentiment.
“It’s really exciting for me, because I think I have you know, a super high ceiling,” Johnson said, speaking with reporters about his first month in the NFL with the Giants. “I think I haven’t even scratched the surface of what I’m capable of. So I’m really looking forward to improving every day when I’m out here.”
Moving into the NFL, Johnson could have plenty of opportunities to shine. If veteran Darren Waller does indeed decide to retire, Daniel Bellinger is Johnson’s biggest competition, and the two could battle it out for the starting job in what could be a potent offense in New York under Brian Daboll’s leadership.
Johnson has proven it before over his four seasons in Happy Valley, appearing in 44 games (29 starts). He hauled in 77 receptions for 938 yards and 12 touchdowns during that time, making some amazing plays in the process.

Moreover, Johnson broke out in 2022, tallying 20 catches for 328 yards and a score. As a senior this past season, he amassed a career-high 34 receptions for 341 yards and seven touchdowns. Johnson’s seven scores are tied for third in a single season among Penn State tight ends.
One of the reasons the Giants were attracted to the 6-foot-6, 259-pounder was the fact that he was a Reese’s Senior Bowl standout, earning a practice player-of-the-week award for the National Team.
Additionally, Johnson’s athleticism was on full display at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, as he clocked a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash. He scored a 9.93 out of a possible 10.0 Relative Athletic Score, which ranks ninth out of 1,199 TE prospects from 1987 to 2024.
Now, Theo Johnson and the New York Giants are hoping they’re beginning the start of something special in East Rutherford. The tight end will be looking to become the starter of the future for the team, and he’ll have ample opportunities to prove himself at the NFL level over the next couple of months, prior to the start of the season.
