LOOK: Tiger Woods comments on fan support, Scottie Scheffler

Tiger Woods shared a statement via social media after his Masters return, thanking fans for their overwhelming support and congratulating Scottie Scheffler. Woods returned to the golf course for the first time since his devastating car accident in Feb. 2021 that left his future in the sport in doubt.

“I didn’t play my best out there, but just to have the support and appreciation from all the fans, I don’t think words can describe that. Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on an outstanding win. It’s been a special run,” said Woods via his statement.

Heading into the Masters Tournament, there was no question what the biggest storyline was from the beginning — as Tiger Woods made his surprising return to the course he won his last major on. In 2019 at the Masters, Woods won his first major victory since 2008, giving him 15 career major victories. In 2021, it wasn’t clear if Woods would ever be able to play golf again professionally after an accident forced him into multiple surgeries for leg injuries.

Woods’ recovery has been lengthy and full of pain for the former No. 1 ranked golfer in the world. At one point, Woods admitted to having conversations with doctors about potentially having his leg amputated to help with pain management. Despite his struggles, Woods not only made his return on the largest stage but found some success as he made the cut line at Augusta for the 22nd-straight time of his career.

While Woods dominated headlines early, current No. 1 ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler dominated the course. Scheffler finished the tournament with a three-stroke lead despite a double bogey on the 18th hole with his victory secured. Scheffler’s victory was his first major win, and his current success has him poised to threaten a victory at any event he plays this year.

With the win, Scheffler has passed $10 million in total earnings this season in just 13 events started. Last season, the PGA leader was Jon Rahm with $7.7 million total. Scheffler has won four of his last six starts, becoming one of the hottest golfers in the world after becoming ranked No. 1.
