Circumstances are everything in sports in putting out a winning product. For example, to Todd McShay, the New York Jets haven’t had the right circumstances since the turn of the century.

On ‘Triple Option’ this week, Urban Meyer was discussing the difference in a player’s career, specifically a quarterback, if they get drafted to a poor team, either on or off the field or both, before ending up with a good one later on. With that, McShay offered the Jets as the example under team owner Woody Johnson with no signs of that stopping after 25 seasons.

“They just happened to put him on a really bad team, a really bad organization that didn’t know how to function. And, it’s amazing to me that certain organizations just are lousy,” Meyer said. “The other one is you get stuck with, you know, a bad organization that you don’t surround him with the proper talent.”

“I mean, the Jets are a perfect example,” replied McShay. “You’re not winning with that owner. Period. You’re not winning with that owner. And, so, as long as Woody Johnson is there and meddling?”

Johnson has owned the Jets since 2000. New York is 173-231 in that time with only eight finishes in the top half of the AFC East and just six appearances in the playoffs, including none in almost a decade and a half since 2010, the longest postseason drought in the NFL by twice as many seasons as the Panthers with the second-longest. With that, the Jets are back trying something else with their hire of Aaron Glenn this offseason after yet another poor tenure into the 2020s.

The New York Jets have done little of much note over the past quarter century, namely the past 14 years, under Johnson. McShay isn’t expecting that history to change either as he remains the owner of the franchise.
