Todd McShay reveals why NFL teams don’t view Kelee Ringo as first-round pick
Todd McShay has watched enough film and done enough analysis to know each prospect in this year’s NFL Draft inside and out. So, with that in mind, he’s the ideal man to have the answer as to why Georgia CB Kelee Ringo has slowly but surely slid drown draft boards.
To McShay, he said on his recent NFL Draft media call that it has a lot to do with Ringo giving up big plays and, in turn, what some scouts believe that stems from. He has all the size and talent but, in some ways, others have questioned his knowledge and love for the game.
“Ringo is an intriguing one. He’s physical at times, he’s got ideal size, he keeps blockers off his body. I think he’s inconsistent, though, in terms of that he has discipline doing certain things versus the run,” said McShay. “He’s got the tools you look for. If you watch the tape? Too many big plays allowed. The instincts haven’t developed enough. Is he putting in the time? Is he studying the way he needs to? Does he love the game? Those are the questions that scouts have asked about him.”
“You’ve got almost a 6’2, 207 pound cornerback that runs a 4.36…We’ve seen a lot of Georgia corners come out with mixed opinions on them. And they come in the league and they’ve had success. I’m hopeful for Ringo that that’s the case,”McShay continued. “He has been knocked when I’ve talked to teams about handling tough coaching, does he love the game. Those sorts of things. But his skillset is impressive. And he’s flashed the big play ability…But, this year, there are too many big plays and touchdowns surrendered because of his eye discipline and locating the ball in the air.”

McShay later compared Ringo to Tariq Woolen in the call. He says both players had everything at their disposal. It was just hard to see the top-notch prospects in them when it came to the film. Still, as McShay pointed out, the Seattle Seahawks drafted Woolen in the fifth round last year and developed him into a Pro-Bowler as a top defensive rookie who tied for the NFL’s lead in interceptions.
In the end, McShay says the former five-star is just going to have to figure it out as he goes. As far as the draft, though, Ringo is simply too good to fall too far in his eyes.
“There’s areas to improve, he’ll get punished a little bit for all the things I mentioned. But, at some point, a team is going to say that’s enough,” McShay said. “There’s enough to see there where we think he’s gonna wind up outplaying where he’s drafted. I think he’s gonna wind up being a second-round pick when it’s all said and done.”
