Tom Brady addresses the possibility of playing until he's 50

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady continues to evade father time. At 45 years old, the seven-time Super Bowl champion is preparing for another year after a brief post-season retirement. As he continues his rollout of off-the-field projects, like his BRADY brand, Brady spoke to Complex reporter Mike Destefano about his future and whether he could play to age 50.

“I do think I could play till 50,” Brady started. “But I don’t think I will just because I know the commitment that it takes. I know the commitment that it takes for me at 44 and 45. I worked out today and it’s a big commitment and I’m away from my 14-year-old son and my 12-year-old son and my nine-year-old daughter.”

With three children in the house, and one about to enter high school, the Bucs quarterback is intent on being able to attend their events and games. His oldest son, Jack, goes to school in New York City.

“If I played till 50, I’d miss a lot of really important things in his life,” Brady said. “And I don’t wanna do that. I wanna be there for him. I wanna be there for my wife. She has goals and ambitions. I’ve really pushed the limits. Personally, I’ve pushed the limits with a lot of people that have been supportive of me over the years. I’ve pushed the limits with my body physically. Emotionally things change over a period of time… So I’m gonna enjoy this year. I don’t know what’s gonna happen beyond this year.”

The oldest player in NFL history, George Blanda, played his last game at 48 in 1975. Brady has already moved into the top 10 on that list.

Prior to announcing his retirement, Tom Brady was allegedly interested in going to the Miami Dolphins and becoming part of the ownership team. Reports have also suggested the team was going to bring in retired Saints coach Sean Peyton.

Sean Payton addresses link to Tom Brady, Miami Dolphins

Following reports that former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton almost went to Miami with Tom Brady this offseason, the legendary head coach spoke about the rumors. The Miami Dolphins were allegedly recruiting both Brady and Payton to their team this season — a plan that was reportedly scrapped after former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed his lawsuit against the NFL.

“I’ve no clue about the Tampa Bay, Miami Dolphins [and] Tom Brady rumor,” said Payton. “My understanding is there was a request that was put in, or their intermediaries talked — and I’m like the rest of you, I heard that story. I wasn’t — I told you guys that already. If I’d have been ready to coach this year, I would have stayed in New Orleans. So it’s nice to have someone interested, and that’s about it. Our focus on Tom Brady has been beating him, not joining him. Honestly, though, I don’t chime in. I watch you guys chime in.

“I follow it just like you. I’m excited about the two picks they have in the first round, be anxious to see how that ends up. But I’m really removed from it and that’s okay though. That’s kinda good. It’s part of the reason why you retire so you don’t stress over it.”

Although it may not be a surprise that Payton would downplay the rumors, according to Payton the idea of him coaching for Miami was never a real option this season.
