The Super Bowl kicked off on Sunday night and it didn’t take very long before we got a good dose of controversy from the officials on the field. The Eagles decided to go for it on fourth down, with Jalen Hurts connecting with AJ Brown on a deep ball down the right sideline, but officials called offensive pass interference on Brown. He barely touched Kansas City defensive back Trent McDuffie, causing McDuffie to go to the ground. And that’s why officials threw the flag. Plenty of people were immediately upset with the call, including Tom Brady and Mike Pereira, who were on the FOX broadcast.
Here’s video of the play below.
“He’s a big, physical, strong receiver. Just getting off the press on McDuffie. Aww, don’t like that one bit. This is too critical of a game. The hand-fighting is going on down the field. What do you think, Mike?” Brady asked.
“Certainly I agree when you look at, there’s hand-fighting. There’s a little bit of shove at the end and a trip. I think it’s one that did not need to be called,” Pereira explained.
“I always thought in these games you let the players play. It should be decided on the field. Don’t like that call to start the game,” Brady finished.

It might have been a controversial call early, but it simply didn’t matter in the end. The Eagles dominated from start to finish en route to a 40-22 blowout victory. AJ Brown finished with three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown.
It was a thorough dismantling of the Chiefs’ dynasty when the lights were the brightest.
It was one of the more dominant performances we’ve ever seen against a Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City team. The Eagles’ secondary forced him to throw two interceptions, one of which was a back breaking pick six by rookie corner Cooper DeJean. Mahomes also fumbled, with the Eagles recovering, yet another crucial play in the game.
The Philadelphia defense sacked Mahomes six times. According to Next Gen Stats, they generated a pressure rate of 38.1%. Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that the Eagles defense didn’t blitz once. Vic Fangio, the defense coordinator for Philly, will forever be remembered for that Super Bowl performance.
