Tom Brady was surprised to hear that Bill Belichick is the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. During the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Pittsburgh Steelers broadcast, Brady reacted to Belichick coaching college football for the first time in his career.

“Kind of blew me away when I heard the news,” Brady said. “I didn’t think that was an opportunity he was looking at, but they’re getting a tremendous coach. …Those guys are going to play very hard. He’s going to coach him well, and it’s a great benefit for all those players who are going to that program because they’re getting the best coach that the NFL has ever seen, now he’s at a college level.”

Brady knows Belichick very well as he played for him when they were both with the New England Patriots. From 2001 to 2019, Brady was the Patriots starting QB, and he and Belichick led the team to nine Super Bowl appearances with six Super Bowl wins.

After the 2019 season, Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won another Super Bowl in his three seasons there. When Brady retired following the 2022 season, Belichick gave him high praise.

“Tom Brady was the ultimate winner. He entered the NFL with little to no fanfare and leaves as the most successful player in league history,” Belichick said in a statement at the time. “His relentless pursuit of excellence drove him on a daily basis. His work ethic and desire to win were both motivational and inspirational to teammates and coaches alike. Tom was a true professional who carried himself with class and integrity throughout his career.”

Belichick is looking to make North Carolina a national title contender. The team has never won a national championship, and the last time it won a conference title was in 1980.

“I always wanted to coach in college football,” Belichick said during his introductory press conference last week, “it just never really worked out. I had some pretty good years in the NFL, so that was okay. This is really kind of a dream come true. I grew up in college football with my dad as a coach at Navy for 50 years, so as a kid, all I really knew was college football. It’s great to come back home to Carolina and back in an environment I really grew up in.”
