Tony Gonzalez says he’ll pay Travis Kelce fine for dunking on goalpost, reacts to Chiefs TD record being broken
Earlier this season, former Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Tony Gonzalez offered to pay the fine if Travis Kelce dunked on the goalpost after setting Gonzalez’s Chiefs touchdown receiving record.
Kelce set the record in Kansas City’s win over the Steelers on Christmas Day, and Gonzalez has agreed to pay the fine, he said Thursday on Twitter.
After Kelce set the record on Wednesday, Tony Gonzalez tweeted at him right after, congratulating him.
Travis Kelce then responded to Gonzalez, stating that he wanted to “show love to the greatest of all time,” while also asking for some help with the fine, which is sure to come.
The crossbar dunking celebration was banned by the NFL ahead of the 2014 season. Dunking a football now leads to a penalty and a potential fine.
Finally, Tony Gonzalez quote Tweeted Kelce and agreed that he would help handle the fine. All in all, it was a really cool back-and-forth interaction between two of the greatest tight ends of all time.
Travis Kelce set the Chiefs franchise record for receiving touchdowns with 77, doing so with a 12-yard touchdown reception.
Kelce broke the previous Kansas City Chiefs record of 76 receiving touchdowns, which was held by Tony Gonzalez. The 35-year-old Kelce is in his 11th season in the NFL after being drafted by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati.

Travis Kelce has proven to be one of the best tight ends in NFL history and helped the Chiefs win three Super Bowls, including each of the past two. Kansas City is once again a contender this season.
Kelce isn’t having the best year of his career in 2024, but he is still the go-to weapon for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He has seven 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his career and he nearly reached that mark last season, finishing with 984.
Before Travis Kelce set the Chiefs receiving touchdowns record, Tony Gonzalez spoke about the possibility of him doing so.
“I don’t want him to break it. Come on,” Tony Gonzalez joked, according to A to Z Sports. “I am so happy for him. He’s one of the best tight ends to ever do it. On and off the field, I’ve been watching him grow. I’ve been following him since he was a rookie. And I’m not surprised by it.
“He’s one of the greatest tight ends of all time. To have myself, then to have Travis to come and take that torch. A lot of history is going to be broken out on this field today.”
