Thompson High School in Alabama is set to produce multiple picks this year. Outfielder D’Marion Terrell is officially one of them, going No. 577 overall in the 19th round to the Toronto Blue Jays. A late riser in the cycle, Terrell is thought to have an incredible ceiling.

Terrell was originally slated to begin his college baseball career at Northwest Florida State, a Junior College. But a strong senior season at Thompson meant the in-state Auburn Tigers came calling and did enough to land his commitment.

Putting up some great numbers is why Auburn got involved in the recruitment. Terrell put up an average of .426 with 55 hits, 20 walks, and just 17 strikeouts in 129 at-bats. He almost scored himself as often as he drove in players, having 41 runs and 42 RBIs on the stat sheet.

Extra base hits came often as well, leading the area in home runs with 10 but adding 10 doubles and four triples. All of that added up to an OPS of 1.318.

But there is now a decision to make regarding his future. Auburn head coach Butch Thompson earned a commitment and you have to imagine Terrell will be welcomed on the Plains. The Tigers are fresh off a rough season and looking to get back to the program’s winning ways.

An opportunity to turn professional has been made possible too by TEAM NAME. Not exactly the worst spot to be in just a couple of months after graduating high school.

What MLB scouts are saying about D’Marion Terrell

Terrell was ranked the No. 153 overall prospect heading into the draft by MLB.com, with a scouting report being provided as well.

“Terrell’s raw power is his best attribute, as he has 25-30 homer potential thanks to the strength and leverage in his 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame,” the scouting report said. “There are mixed reports on his hitting ability, though his proponents like his gap-to-gap approach, plate discipline and pitch recognition. He has a sound left-handed swing with impressive bat speed, though he won’t fully tap into his pop until he improves his timing.”

Defensively, MLB.com projects Terrell as a left fielder due to his “average” arm. However, if there is a path to playing a different position, first base could be Terrell’s calling. Some development would certainly be required but “the payoff could be huge.”
