Travis Hunter addresses doubters he can play both ways in NFL: 'I'm just different'

Most NFL experts expect Travis Hunter to play on one side of the ball at the next level. However, when a reporter asked Hunter what position he expects to play in the NFL, the former Colorado two-way star refused to limit himself to a single position.
“I did some meetings at receiver. I did some meetings at DB. So, it’s still up in the air,” Hunter said. “They say, ‘Nobody has ever done it the way I do it.’ I tell them, ‘I’m just different.'”
Hunter is certainly different. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner was dominant at cornerback and wide receiver this past season at Colorado. He was the first player to win the award while playing significant minutes on both sides of the ball since Charles Woodson (1997).
On defense, Hunter tallied 31 tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions, a conference-best 15 passes defended (tied for fifth nationally) and forced a game-winning fumble in the 2024 campaign. For his efforts, he was named the 2024 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Hunter’s numbers were just as impressive, if not better, on offense. The Georgia native led the conference with 92 receptions and 14 receiving touchdowns while finishing with 1,152 receiving yards, the second-most in the Big 12.

Hunter is projected to be a top five pick in the upcoming draft and will show off his talents this week at the NFL Scouting Combine. Although most insiders expect Hunter to focus on a single position at the professional level, others believe he is capable of his two-way success translating to the NFL.
On Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine, Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan — owner of the No. 1 overall pick — explained why Travis Hunter could play both sides of the ball in the NFL.
“Yeah, it’s very realistic. He’s a unique player that there’s not a whole lot of other players that you can compare to what he’s done,” Callahan said, according to JT Ruhnke. “There’s not many guys that have played that many snaps on both sides of the ball. And you watch his tape and you see his ability to play both at a very high level.
“Yeah, I think anybody that you talk to about him is going to say the same thing, that he’s got the ability to play both. And I think you’ll find out where he fits (when) you get him, but he’s got a real unique ability to do a lot of different things.”
