Travis Hunter jokes he could play kicker, promotes position versatility

Travis Hunter isn’t allowing coaches to corner him into playing a single position. At the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner delivered a hilarious answer when asked if he could play kicker, as well.
“I can do everything for real. I can do anything on the football field,” Hunter said. “… I’m definitely different. I’m one of a kind and I call myself a unicorn.”
There’s certainly nobody quite like Hunter. The two-way star was dominant at cornerback and wide receiver this past season at Colorado. He was the first player to win the Heisman Trophy while playing significant minutes on both sides of the ball since Charles Woodson (1997).
On defense, Hunter tallied 31 tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions, a conference-best 15 passes defended (tied for fifth nationally) and forced a game-winning fumble in the 2024 campaign. For his efforts, he was named the 2024 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Hunter’s numbers were just as impressive, if not better, on offense. The Georgia native led the conference with 92 receptions and 14 receiving touchdowns while finishing with 1,152 receiving yards, the second-most in the Big 12.
Despite Hunter’s success on both sides of the ball in college, many NFL experts don’t believe he can play multiple positions at the next level. Their beliefs were seemingly confirmed when the NFL Scouting Combine initially listed Hunter as just a cornerback.

However, it didn’t take long for Hunter to set the record straight.
“First thing I did was text my agent, and I asked him, ‘Why am I listed as just a cornerback?'” Hunter recalled. “He texted me, ‘We didn’t say nothing. We didn’t say anything about it.’ So we got that fixed real fast.”
Travis Hunter is determined to play both ways in the NFL and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
“One thing I know is I’m gonna have to go in there and work for it, so I’m not setting my mind to say that I’m just gonna play one,” Hunter said. “I’m gonna go in there and work for my other position, which I’m gonna choose to pick me at first.”
Of course, if Hunter wants to play offense and defense in the NFL, he’s going to need exceptional stamina. Nonetheless, Hunter assured fans that wouldn’t be a problem when asked how many snaps he could play in Week 1 of the NFL season.
“I can play all of them if they give me the opportunity to play all of them,” Hunter said.
