Going into the NFL Draft Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter is among the most interesting prospects, not just for his talent but because he’s a two-way star. It was that ability to thrive at wide receiver and corner in college that helped him to win the Heisman Trophy and makes him unique among NFL prospects.

Now, it looks like his focus is going to be on cornerback heading into the NFL, at least for the time being. According to the official list of invites just distributed by the NFL Hunter will be attending the NFL Combine as a corner.

That matters because it’s going to change what drills Hunter is set to do at the NFL Combine. He’s going to be showing off for teams and scouts alongside the corners, working in those defensive back drills primarily. On top of that, it also implies that corner is going to be his focus going into the NFL, with wide receiver being the second position he focuses on.

In the 2024 season, Hunter had 36 tackles on defense, including a tackle for a loss, to go with four interceptions and 11 passes defended. Hunter also forced a fumble. Then, as a wide receiver, he had 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns as Hunter played nearly every snap of the season for Colorado.

Coming out of high school, Hunter was focused on corner too. A five-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, he was the second-ranked player overall and the top-ranked athlete. However, he had to earn his playing time at wide receiver under head coach Deion Sanders at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado.

Regardless of the position that Hunter plays at the NFL Combine, it’s well-established that he’s a capable two-way player. His ability to play both positions at an elite level has made him a generational talent, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

“If you say generational talent, I’m taking Travis Hunter,” Kiper Jr. said. “If I’m looking at that, Travis Hunter is the guy, I think. He can be an elite receiver. He can be a heck of a corner, you can figure that out. Abdul Carter as a pass rusher, you could go that route. I would have no problem with that. But if you’re picking the best player in the draft, it’s Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. Those are the top two.”

In the latest mock draft on NFL.com, Travis Hunter is set to be selected second overall by the Cleveland Browns.
