Shedeur Sanders had to wait until day three, but he finally heard his name called with the No. 144 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Based on the relationship the two developed in college, it comes as no surprise that Sanders was on the phone with former Colorado teammate Travis Hunter when his name was being called.

Hunter was all smiles and hit his college teammate with a simple, “Let’s get it!” seal of approval. The new Jacksonville Jaguars star threw up a ‘Sko Buffs’ hand signal to boot. Watch the exciting moment for both Sanders and Hunter below.

Hunter would end up being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 2 overall pick after trading up from fifth overall with, ironically, Sanders’ new team in the Cleveland Browns. Some thought there was potential for Sanders to be taken with that fifth pick.

However, the former Colorado star quarterback had to wait nearly 48 more hours to find out his fate in the 2025 NFL Draft. When it finally came, it was all smiles from Sanders, as well as Hunter on the other end of the phone.

The two standout players spent the last three years as teammates, including one year at Jackson State and the final two playing for Colorado — all under Sanders’ father and Buffaloes head coach, Deion Sanders. By the end of his college career, Shedeur Sanders would be regarded as one of the top QBs at the collegiate level last season.

As a senior in 2024, Sanders threw for a career-best 4,134 yards on an impressive 74% completion percentage to go along with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Spending the last two seasons playing for the Buffaloes, he scored 72 total touchdowns. All told, Sanders passed for 14,318 yards and 134 touchdowns. His 10 interceptions in 2024 were a career-high, so he isn’t known for turning the ball over through the air.

Those numbers make Sanders’ fall to the fifth round even more perplexing. However, some point toward potential coachability issues regarding discipline, attitude, etc., as a reason he dropped so far down the draft.

Regardless, he was finally taken off the board in the fifth round and the Browns will give Sanders a chance, just like the other four QBs on Cleveland’s roster, to go out and compete for the starting quarterback job throughout the summer and into fall camp. Where he will land in the initial depth chart remains to be seen.
