San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Trent Williams is not at training camp because of a contract-related issue. While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he knew that Williams could possibly hold out of camp due to contract reasons.

“It was something I knew could be a possibility,” Shanahan said, per Pro Football Talk. “I was hoping he would be here, but I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident it will all work out in the long run and he’ll be here and we’ll get on the same page with everything, but it’s just one day of practice and I think Trent will be alright missing a few practices.”

Williams, 36, is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL as he’s been named to the All-Pro First Team for the last three seasons. He was traded to the 49ers in April of 2020 after spending 10 seasons in Washington. In March 2021, Williams signed a six-year, $138.06 million contract extension with the 49ers, making his the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL at the time.

“He’s a different human being. He’s a different player,” general manager John Lynch said about Williams eariler this year, per NBC Bay Area . “I don’t like talking about Hall of Fame-type stuff with players. But he’s a guy I’m not shy doing that about because he’ll be there and he should be there first ballot. Nothing would help to cement that more than a win in this game.”

Trent Williams talks the possibility of retirement

Williams, who played college football at Oklahoma, has put togther a Hall of Fame career as he’s been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times along with being selected to the All-Pro Team four times. Before the 49ers took on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last year, Williams talked about finishing his current contract before he considers retring.

“I don’t even like to speculate on it,” Williams said. “I’m not even worried about the expiration date at this point. I’ve been so blessed to this point to be 14 years in and still playing at a high level. The last thing I’m worrying about is how many I got left. I think I’m gonna approach it every year the same. And when I’m not the same, I know I can hang it up
