Report: Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers agree on new contract extension, ending holdout
The San Francisco 49ers and their All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams have agreed to a contract extension, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Tuesday.
Williams returned to the Bay Area Monday night, indicating a deal was close between the two sides. His agent at Elite Loyalty Sports said the following in a text to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network: “Still A few things to work through but close enough to report today.”
The 36-year-old had three years remaining on the six-year, $138.1 million deal he signed in March 2021. There was no guaranteed money left on his deal, however, and Williams wanted to restructure. He has been holding out of training camp as a result. Williams will now report ahead of Monday’s Week 1 home contest against the New York Jets.
Williams has been dominant since arriving in San Francisco in 2020, earning Pro Bowl honors in each season. He has been named a First-Team All-Pro in three consecutive seasons, allowing just two sacks over that timeframe. Despite his status of being the NFL‘s best left tackle, Williams, who has a 2024 base salary of $20.05 million, saw several others leapfrog him this offseason.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Tristan Wirfs became the highest-paid offensive tackle this offseason with an annual salary of $28.125 million. Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions [$28 million per year] and Christian Darrisaw of the Minnesota Vikings [$26 million] also signed deals surpassing Williams.
General manager John Lynch can surely breathe now. In addition to Williams, star wideout Brandon Aiyuk staged a holdout of his own. At one point, it looked as if Aiyuk’s time with the 49ers was done. Last week, Aiyuk and the 49ers agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension with $76 million guaranteed.
Both Williams and Aiyuk are expected to be on the field vs. New York.
