Trevon Diggs calls out Madden after Cowboys rout Washington

Another week, another interception for Trevon Diggs, all while the Dallas Cowboys picked up another win — and it’s starting to become commonplace for the first-time NFL Pro Bowl selection.

Diggs wasted no time in recording his NFL-best 11th interception in a Sunday night beatdown of the Washington Football team, as the Cowboys star sophomore picked off Washington’s Taylor Heinicke on Washington’s first offensive snap of the game. Diggs’ 11th interception moved one step closer to breaking a near-unbreakable Cowboys record, as he tied current Cowboys record-holder Everson Walls for the most interceptions by a Cowboys player in a single season.

Heinicke was looking for wide receiver Terry McLaurin, but Diggs telegraphed the route — and pass — perfectly. And after the game, Diggs lobbied for Madden to bump up some of his ratings on the popular NFL video game.

“Not at all,” Diggs said after the Cowboys’ 56-14 win, when asked if Madden has his ratings correct. “I need to be like 97 speed, 98 catching, 98 jump ball. And I need an X-Factor, too.”

It’s not just the aforementioned statistics, either. The Cowboys star said his route-running is far better than Madden gives him credit for.

“Oh, you can put me up there now,” Diggs said of his route-running rating. “I’m probably in the 80s now.”

Diggs having a historic breakout year for Cowboys

The Cowboys in 2020 used a second-round selection to take Diggs out of Alabama, and the brother of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon turned in a solid rookie season. But with just three interceptions in 12 games during the 2020 season, no one expected a historic performance one year later. Diggs has managed an eye-opening 10 interceptions in just 14 games, an NFL-leading total, and he’s tied Hall of Fame Cowboys cornerback Mel Renfro for the most in franchise history.

He was named a Pro Bowl selection in his second NFL season, and Diggs is far from finished, with the Cowboys just recently clinching their first NFL Playoffs berth since 2018.

The Dallas Cowboys clinched the playoffs on Thursday night, thanks to a Tennessee Titans win, and on Sunday night they locked up the NFC East before kickoff, after the Raiders narrowly defeated the Denver Broncos.

After recording 10 interceptions, Diggs recently joked that his goal is to notch another 10 interceptions in the last three regular-season games of the year. That certainly won’t come to fruition, but after notching one more in the first of three regular-season contests, Diggs was able to inch one step closer to a coveted spot in NFL history.
