Trevon Diggs out of Cowboys practice with toe injury

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is sidelined from training camp due to a toe injury, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. But there doesn’t appear to be any major reason for concern.

Per the report, head coach Mike McCarthy said that Diggs suffered a bruised toe. The injury doesn’t prompt any concern, the team just wants to be smart by holding him out of practice.

So, while any sort of injury is never good news, it’s not a huge deal for Dallas.

Additionally, McCarthy doesn’t believe the injury will keep Diggs sidelined long. He said the expectation is that the defensive back can return in a few days.

“I know he wants to be out there,” McCarthy said, per Machota. “It’s more of the doctors, just making sure that it’s not more than it is.”

Diggs put together a strong season for the Cowboys in 2022. He appeared in all 17 regular season games, totaling 59 tackles, 14 passes defended, three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Dallas posted a 12-5 record for the second-consecutive season.

Diggs’ took off in 2021, when he hauled in a remarkable 11 interceptions for the Cowboys. He returned two of those for touchdowns and also accounted for 21 passes defended in 16 contests.

Through his first three NFL seasons, Diggs has totaled 169 tackles, 49 passes defended and 17 interceptions. Not a bad stretch for the former second-round selection.

Trevon Diggs says ‘I’m just starting’

Already a two-time Pro Bowler, you might think Diggs is at the top of his game right now. But the defensive back doesn’t believe that’s the case.

He thinks there’s still plenty of room for growth.

“Hell no,” Diggs said when asked if he’s at the top of his game, via Todd Archer. “I’m just starting. Literally… I want to be flawless all the way around. Have no flaws in my game, just try to be perfect, just put on display that I’m one of the best DBs in the NFL.”

Diggs’ comment comes after he inked a massive extension to remain in Dallas. The cornerback agreed to a five-year extension worth $97 million. With incentives, he has the opportunity to earn as much as $100 million over the course of the deal.

It makes sense that Dallas would want to hold Diggs out of practice, at least for a few days, given the injury. No need to risk further damage on what of the league’s top defensive backs.
