While no decision has been made yet, star cornerback Trevon Diggs could potentially be the lone Dallas Cowboy to begin training camp on the PUP list. ESPN’s Todd Archer pointed such out via X on Tuesday. Diggs is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during the 2023 season.

Five other players could have been candidates but are “scheduled” to be cleared and should be good to go. Diggs missing out at the start is not the best news but being nearly 100% healthy heading out West is positive news for the Cowboys.

“The final decision comes by Thursday, but look for CB Trevon Diggs to open camp on the active/PUP list as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL,” Archer said via X. “All others: DeMarvion Overshown, John Stephens Jr., David Durden, Mazi Smith, Luke Schoonmaker scheduled to be ready to go.”

Diggs tore his ACL on Sept. 17, Week 2 against the New York Jets. The injury occurred at AT&T Stadium and kept the cornerback out for the rest of the year. Dallas has to deal without him, turning to Stephon Gilmore and DeRon Bland. Just the former of the two is no longer with the team as Diggs’ eventual return brings back one of the NFL’s best cover guys.

The Cowboys are still putting a lot of faith in Diggs as he enters his second season of a five-year contract. A former second-round pick, Diggs was named a first-team All-Pro after his 2022 season in which he recorded 11 interceptions, leading the league.

Dallas Cowboys expected to be healthy outside of Diggs

Dallas will be disappointed to not have Diggs out there to begin training camp. But they will be thankful to have everybody else healthy, especially some younger players who are expected to step into bigger roles this season.

Smith is certainly one of them, the former first-round pick out of Michigan. In what was a surprising pick at the time — Dallas does not usually invest early draft capital on a defensive tackle — Smith’s rookie season was not a successful one. He played in all 17 games but started just three, recording 13 tackles and three TFLs.

Another ACL plagued the Cowboys with Overshown. A second-year linebacker out of Texas, his injury took place during a preseason game. Overshown could have contributed as a rookie and should be able to make an impact in 2024.
