Trevor Lawrence agrees to five-year, $275 million contract with Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence just agreed to a monster contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Lawrence and the Jaguars agreed to a five-year contract extension with $275 million with $200 million guaranteed and $142 million at signing. Lawrence’s average of $55 million per year matches Joe Burrow as the NFL’s highest-paid player.

Lawrence is coming off a 2023 season that saw him complete 65.6 precent of his passes while thowing for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 inteceptions. In his three seasons with the Jaguars, the Clemson alum has a career passer rating of 85 and record of 20-30. The Jaguars exercised Lawrence’s fifth-year option on his rookie deal in April.

Earlier this month, Lawrence talked about his ongoing contract extension talks. “I’m aware of what’s going on, but I try to keep my focus on doing my job out here,” Lawrence said. “I have full belief that’ll take care of itself and that’s not something that I need to worry about. That’s why I pay people and hire people to do that for me. That’s not my job, but I know what’s going on. I’m aware of the situation, I think that’s important too. I try to keep my focus and energy on being the best player I can be to help us win.”

Jaguars GM Trent Baalke worked hard on getting Trevor Lawrence signed

Back in April, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke talked about Lawrence’s contract extension. “We’ve had some great talks and great conversations,” Baalke said, per NFL.com. “I spoke with his agency again last night. We’re working, but you can’t force this stuff. I said the same thing with Josh [Allen’s] situation, I said it would take some time and it did. But we’re glad it got completed when it did so we could go into this offseason program knowing that’s behind us and we can move forward. We’re working at it, we’ll continue to work at it. Ownership is involved, obviously. Coach is involved; we’re going to put our best foot forward and hope to get something accomplished here.”

The Jaguars are hoping they get more of the Lawrence they saw in 2022. In that season, Lawrence threw for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. Jacksonville reached the playoffs that year and defated the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 in the wild-card round.
