Troy Aikman rips CeeDee Lamb, Dallas Cowboys WRs, calls them lazy
With all that’s going wrong with the Dallas Cowboys, Troy Aikman is putting a portion of it on their receiving corps.
While on 96.7 The Ticket this morning, Aikman went in on the work of Dallas’ wideouts, specifically their route running. The “lazy” effort on them along with other aspects has led to what he sees as a pass game that’s not on the same page. That includes that of their All-Pro receiver too in CeeDee Lamb.
“I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes. And I’ve thought that beyond this year,” Aikman said. “I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running.”
“As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see,” said Aikman. “I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run. Usually, if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play but, if they’re not, they don’t and it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”
Aikman then compared it to the play of some of the other pass catchers across the NFL.
“I just finished watching the Baltimore Ravens because I have them this week. You put on film of theirs and watch their receivers run routes and they come off the football. So does San Francisco’s and Green Bay’s and others.”

Dak Prescott currently has the second-worst completion percentage of his career this season at 63.4%. They still have a top passing game in the league – with some of that due to the worst rushing attack. Still, through six games, the Cowboys’ top-four receivers have a catch rate of 60.3%. That includes the last two where Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin have caught 62% of their targets while Prescott has thrown four interceptions.
Aikman doesn’t want to express anything on behalf of Prescott. Still, as a former quarterback for the franchise himself, he thinks the receivers should be better than they have been for Dallas’ offense.
“It’s hard to play the position if you’re not certain how guys are going to run routes or where they’re going to be,” said Aikman. “I’m not speaking for Dak. Dak may say, ‘Hey, I think (their routes) are amazing.’ But as a former quarterback watching it, it’s gotta get a lot better.”
