Former Cowboys star and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman shared a vacation photo he took with another Dallas legend while in Florida. Aikman shared a photo via social media of him hanging out with long-time friend and former coach Jimmy Johnson, as the pair appeared to have a great time on the water in the Florida sun while shirtless.

Troy Aikman shares vacation photo with Jimmy Johnson

Cowboys fans were treated to a happy blast-from-the-past moment with Aikman’s photo, as he and the 78-year-old Johnson were in a great mood while spending time together. Both Dallas legends have found a second career in NFL broadcasting, but they remain forever linked by their time on the field while winning two Super Bowls in Johnson’s five-year stint as Dallas’ coach.

Both joined the NFL via the Cowboys in 1989, with Aikman being selected first-overall in the 1989 NFL Draft out of UCLA and Johnson coming from the University of Miami. Johnson turned the franchise around quickly, and after winning only one game in 1989, Dallas won back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Johnson would leave the team during the following offseason after conflicts with owner Jerry Jones, and Aikman would win one more Super Bowl with new coach Barry Switzer.

The duo have been close since Aikman’s final year of high school, where the first coach to ever perform a home visit to Aikman was Johnson while recruiting him for Oklahoma State. While Johnson would leave for the Miami head coaching job the next year, it was widely believed that Johnson was going to secure Aikman’s commitment at Oklahoma State before he met with Oklahoma and Barry Switzer.

Even after letting Johnson know that he would be signing with Oklahoma, Aikman recalled speaking with Johnson afterwards on the phone and hearing from the coach that he just wanted Aikman to find success.

Aikman learned at the same time as Johnson that Johnson would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020, leading to an incredible moment on the broadcast studio for Fox Sports. Aikman was visibly emotional watching his former coach and friend earn the ultimate accolade the sport has to offer, and would eventually be the one who inducted Johnson into the Hall of Fame at the ceremony.

“Jimmy has never been appreciated in Dallas for what he accomplished,” said Aikman when Johnson learned he had been voted into the Hall of Fame. “He’s a revered figure here in Dallas, but he’s never been thanked. He’s never stood on the field and/or a podium and had the fans show him how much they appreciate him. A lot of us have had that because of Jimmy. Now, he’s going to have his day.”
