Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is set to meet with neurologists this week, per Adam Schefter. This comes after he suffered a concussion in Miami’s Thursday night game.

The latest concussion for Tagovailoa came when he scrambled against the Buffalo Bills and took a shot from Damar Hamlin with his facemask hitting Hamlin’s arm. He then had a fencing response and it would take a few minutes before he could get off the ground and make his way to the locker room.

Concussions have become an issue for Tagovailoa in his professional career after he suffered multiple concussions in 2022. At the time, that impacted the NFL‘s concussion protocol in terms of how those types of injuries are reported and evaluated. Going back to Alabama, he now has four documented concussions in five seasons and this was another scary incident that has led to concerns about his future in the sport.

With that, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel said that he’s not focused on Tua Tagovailoa’s return to football right now. For the time being, the focus is on his family and health.

“You’re talking about his career — his career is his,” McDaniel said. “I just wish that people would for a second hear what I’m saying, that bringing up his future is not in the best interest of him. So, I’m going to plead with everybody that does genuinely care that that should be the last thing on your mind.”

Tua Tagovailoa’s college coach, the legendary Nick Saban, also shared his thoughts on the injury concerns, emphasizing that his future comes down to a medical decision.

“I think this has to be a medical decision,” Saban said. “I mean you have to let medical people who understand the circumstances around these injuries, these concussions. … And when you have multiple concussions that’s not a good sign.”

For now, Tagovailoa is assessing his future and will hopefully get good long-term news from the neurologists when he meets with them.

As for the Dolphins, Miami lost the game to Buffalo 31-10. In place of Tua Tagovailoa, Skylar Thompson came into the game and finished things out by completing eight of fourteen passes for 80 yards. A former seventh-round pick out of Kansas State, he’s been with the Dolphins since 2022 and should at least know the offense well to run it.

Next week, Miami travels on the road to play the Seattle Seahawks. They’ll have a long week to prepare for the game.
