Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion on Thursday night. For now, though, he has no plans to retire after meeting with specialists, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

For now, Tagovailoa hasn’t been cleared to return to action. That’s a decision that will come down to the medical team around him. However, when that time comes, it looks like he’ll return to the field for the Dolphins.

“Tua Tagovailoa and his doctors will be making the decisions about his playing, his health,” Rapoport said. “They will be driving the process. My understanding is Tagovailoa has no plans to retire.”

Tagovailoa suffered the concussion when he was scrambling and collided with Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. Hamlin’s arm caught Tagovailoa in the facemask and he went down into a fencing response and it would be a few minutes before he could get up and go to the locker room to be ruled out of the game.

“He has no plans to retire. In fact, his eyes are already on returning to the football field,” Rapoport continued. “As far as when that goes, we simply do not know. Every concussion is different. The way every player responds to a concussion is different. He will be healthy enough to play when he is healthy enough to play and when he and his doctors decide that.”

For many, it’s concerning to see how concussions have stacked up for Tagovailoa. He suffered two in 2022. Going back to his time at  Alabama, he has now suffered four documented concussions in five seasons.

“That said, he has already begun the process of seeing a concussion specialist, as he did in 2022. Wouldn’t be surprised if he saw the same doctors,” Rapoport said. “The goal is to get on the field when he is ready. That’s one reason why Mike McDaniel did not put a timeline on it, wouldn’t even address it. Timelines lead to anxiety. As far as the football goes, wouldn’t be surprised if he misses multiple games as Mike McDaniel said. Skylar Thompson is the starting quarterback going forward.”

A former seventh-round pick out of Kansas State, Thompson has been with the Dolphins since 2022 and knows the offense well. He replaced Tagovailoa and completed eight of fourteen passes for 80 yards. Next week, the Dolphins will travel to play the Seattle Seahawks, looking to bounce back from their difficult loss.
