Tua Tagovailoa injury update: Mike McDaniel shares latest on Dolphins QB, addresses potential for surgery
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared an injury update on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the team defeated the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Per Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, McDaniel told reporters it’s too early to say if Tagovailoa, who has a hip injury, can play next Sunday against the New York Jets. He also said that hip surgery is not on the table right now.
Tua Tagovailoa was inactive for the Browns game because of the injured hip. “From a medical standpoint, it was not an option for him to play,” McDaniel told reporters.
The injury occurred when Tagovailoa and the Dolphins were facing the Houston Texans in Week 15. The former Alabama Crimson Tide star finished the game and played in the Dolphins’ win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16.
“I mean, it’s good. It’s just like anyone else on the team and anyone else around the league,” Tagovailoa said Thursday when asked how his hip felt, per ESPN. “You get banged up a little bit towards the ending of the year, so just got to take care of that.”

Tua Tagovailoa has battled injuries all season
In the win against the 49ers, Tagovailoa completed 64.7 percent of his passes and threw for 215 yards and one touchdown. In the previous week, the 26-year-old recorded a 72.5 completion percentage and threw one touchdown with three interceptions in a 20-12 loss to Houston.
The 2024 season has been a challenging one for Tagovailoa. On Sept. 12, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in the Thursday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills. He was placed on injured reserve and missed the Dolphins’ next four games.
“I’ve got to be smart. That’s it, I’ve got to be smart,” Tagovailoa told reporters when he returned to the lineup in late October, per ESPN. “My entire time playing football, I’ve been a competitor and that is, or was sort of my edge when I would run — from high school, even in college I would do the same thing. … The professional level, the best of the best, you just can’t be doing that. So, [I’ve] definitely got to stay more available for the team, for the organization, for our guys.”
