Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is trying out a new helmet specifically designed to prevent quarterbacks from sustaining injuries when their heads make contact with the turf.

The brand Vicis is behind the design, which was approved in April. Tagovailoa is currently trying it out in OTAs but the design seems tailor-made for him after his recent slew of scary head injuries in 2022.

“I’m still trying to feel it out, so what better time to feel it out than OTAs? I heard it’s supposedly better than the helmet I was wearing last year,” Tagovailoa said, via Pro Football Talk. “If it could be that much more safe, then why not give it a shot?”

Tagovailoa’s injuries began during a road trip against the Cincinnati Bengals. After his head connected to the turf, Tagovailoa was taken off the field in an ambulance in one of the most terrifying moments in recent NFL history. Another concussion later in the season caused Miami to shut him down for the year. He last made an appearance for the Dolphins on Christmas Day against Green Bay.

Injuries have been the story of Tagovailoa’s career thus far. Dating back to his time at Alabama, his collegiate career ended due to hip surgery during the 2019 season. Tagovailoa also delt with an ailing ankle injury during his time in Tuscaloosa as well.

It goes without saying — he has not been able to consistently been able to stay on the field. This new helmet could be a game-changer for Tagovailoa.

“The thing that distinguishes quarterbacks and their concussions is they have a disproportionate number of head-to-ground impacts that cause concussions,” said Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy back in April.

“This past year we had an increase in the number of quarterback concussions, and it was the same helmet-to-ground dynamic. Many people would say it’s because quarterbacks are scrambling more often, but we didn’t see that. It was still the quarterback in the pocket, getting hit and the head hitting the ground as they were holding onto the ball.”

Tagovailoa has admitted he contemplated retirement following his injuries last season. Now, his helmet is supposedly safer than ever — and even just wearing it could simply make him feel safe. We obviously won’t know until the season starts, but it is certainly a step in the right direction for the Dolphins star.
