In a shocking turn of events, Ty Dillon will be out of the No. 25 Rackley WAR Chevy in the Truck Series. Dawson Sutton will take over. Dawson, son of team co-owner Curtis Sutton, made his NASCAR debut earlier this year with Rackley in the Truck Series.

This is an interesting decision. Ty Dillon is out of the truck. Dawson Sutton takes over. But Dillon is staying on with the team as a driver coach. Sutton, only 18 years old, has just two Truck Series starts in his career.

Those races, P28 at North Wilkesboro and P18 at Nashville didn’t show much. But Sutton has been developing in the late model ranks. He is running the ASA Stars Tour this year.

During his time with Rackley WAR in the No. 25 Chevy, Ty Dillon did not fair well. He recorded only two top-10s on the season. That was a notable decline from the two years prior when Matt DiBenedetto was in the truck.

In 2022, Matty D had seven top-10s including a win at Talladega in the fall. The following season he pointed his way into the playoffs and recorded 12 top-10s in 20 races, including a pair of P3 finishes, before Rackley WAR took him out of the truck.

As of September 17th, the last time ASA Stars standings were updated, Dawson Sutton sits fifth overall in points. Earlier this season, he won his first ASA race ever when he took the checkered flag in the Father’s Day 100.

Sutton is an up-and-coming driver. Dillon is rumored to be headed back to the Cup Series. A press release from Rackley WAR states that the two sides mutually agreed to swap roles to close out the year. Now, Dillon is a coach.

Ty Dillon responds to losing seat to Dawson Sutton

Again, there are rumors that Ty Dillon is headed to Kaulig Racing next season. Which does not feel like a great move for either side. The last time Dillon was in the Cup Series, he seemed overwhelmed.

Following the news, Dillon released a statement of his own on the matter.

“I am thankful to everyone at Rackley WAR for the opportunity to make my return to the Truck Series. I look forward to mentoring Dawson for the remainder of this season, and am very excited to focus on my future plans behind the wheel in 2025.”

Losing your seat to a teenager is tough. This move to the Truck Series was supposed to show that Ty Dillon still had a place in NASCAR. While he is set to land a promotion and a ride for 2025, what are the genuine expectations?

Kaulig Racing made a strange move this season by having Daniel Hemric in the No. 31 car and running a part-time car or two throughout the season. Next year, they will move AJ Allmendinger back to the Cup Series, great move. But if they add Dillon, it will be puzzling from a performance standpoint.
