Coming out of the Stage 2 pit stops, Ty Gibbs and his crew made a big mistake when the driver dragged the gas can onto pit road. The can caught fire and caused quite a scene coming out of those NASCAR stops. Luckily, the can didn’t blow up or cause damage to Gibbs’ car.

Fuel fires are scary in any motorsport. Ty Gibbs dragging his gas can down pit road could have led to more than just an odd scene in the middle of the race. Thankfully, nothing worse than a bit of wasted fuel. Oh, and Joe Gibbs Racing is down a gas can now.

Gibbs had to serve a penalty and go to the rear of the field of drivers on the lead lap. He was running in or around the top-10 prior to that.

That’s not something you see every day.

Right now, it is looking like a Ford and Hendrick show. However, there are a number of Toyotas that are going to try and make things interesting if possible. There is a lot of race left and we could see anything happen before the checkered flag flies.

Ty Gibbs finishing up Rookie of the Year campaign

No matter what Ty Gibbs does for the rest of the season, he will be the Cup Series Rookie of the Year. He didn’t make the playoffs but that doesn’t matter. He was battling only Noah Gragson for the honor. Given Gragson’s early departure, it makes things even more plain to see.

Even prior to Gragson’s departure from Legacy Motor Club, it was all Gibbs. He has had a really solid season in 2023. A number of top-10s, a couple of top-5s – things have just worked out. For the most part. There are times when Gibbs has missed out on a pole award or even a win due to this or that reason.

Racing in the Cup Series as a rookie isn’t easy. The fact that Gibbs has done all he has this season at just 20 years old is impressive enough. He will be in the Cup Series for years to come and will likely be a champion at some point in the future.

Ty Gibbs might not be having a great day today, that penalty is really going to hurt his chances. That won’t stop him from claiming the top honor as a rookie.
