Ty Gibbs explains Justin Haley retaliation incident, getting airborne
During the Last Chance Qualifier, Ty Gibbs was spun by Justin Haley. In his attempt at retaliation, he stepped over the line a bit. The No. 54 Toyota Camry went airborne as Gibbs ramped off of his NASCAR rival.
Ty Gibbs and Justin Haley are going to be racing each other plenty this season. It looks like the year is off to a rough start as far as their relationship goes.
After failing to transfer out of the LCQ, Gibbs spoke to the media. He meant to hit Haley, but he wasn’t trying to ramp his car into the air.
“I don’t know, I just had a little left front damage and gave him a little tap, but didn’t mean to make it that big,” Gibbs said, via Jeff Gluck of The Athletic.
When asked about the hit from another reporter, Gibbs was honest. None of the hits feel good in this car.
“Stiff, but they’re all pretty stiff in this thing, so.”
Ty Gibbs is going to have a good season. He won’t advance to the Clash main event, though. It was a tough go of things. The 54 had a good run going in the first half of the season. Then he lost his spot in line.
Once he got into the middle of the pack, it was a dogfight. That’s how he got into it with Haley. This is Bowman Gray, folks. These NASCAR Cup Series drivers are getting into the spirit of the track in their own way.

Ty Gibbs – Will he finally win a race this season?
This marks the start of Ty Gibbs’ third full-time season. This is generally the year that Cup Series drivers break through if they are going to break through. For Gibbs, winning a race in 2025 is almost a must.
Chase Elliott took until his third season. Many current stars have had the same timeline. Once you get to that 100th race or so, things start to finally click. Gibbs has 87 starts under his belt and has earned two career pole awards. A win is right there.
The No. 54 team does have a new crew chief this season. Gibbs will have to learn how to work in the new system and Tyler Allen will have to learn how to work with his driver.
The NASCAR Clash at Bowman Gray ends early for Ty Gibbs this year. He will hope to go to Daytona with a fire under him and a little bit of luck. Does Ty Gibbs, Daytona 500 champion have a ring to it?
