While he didn’t come away with a top-10 finish, Ty Gibbs had a solid day at Richmond. His pit crew even set a new NASCAR record. Remember last season when Joe Gibbs Racing came out with a brand new pit stop procedure? Well, they’ve since abandoned it, but apparently, they don’t need it.

That new procedure last year produced a stop of 8.96 seconds for Kyle Busch at Kansas. Then they went on to break it again later that year with an 8.6-second stop in August of last year. Well, that has once again been broken.

The pit crew of the No. 54 team for Ty Gibbs laid down a stop in just 8.54 seconds. All four tires changed and fuel added to the car and out he went in the blink of an eye. NASCAR pit crews are the best of the best regardless of series and these guys are the top of that group.

Earlier this season at the All-Star Race, Ty Gibbs’ crew won the pit crew challenge. So it is no surprise that they remain quick in the pits. That must have been the perfect pit stop when they made it, and I’m sure every member of the crew knew they had done something special after it happened.

With his pit crew offering consistency and speed, Gibbs has a lot less work to do. Gaining spots on pit road is easy when you have the quickest crew in the Cup Series.

Ty Gibbs on the edge of making NASCAR playoffs

After his Richmond performance, Ty Gibbs moved up two spots in the NASCAR standings. He’s looking directly at 16th place right now and is only 18 points down from catching up to Michael McDowell. Michigan is another track for him to chip away at points and possibly put himself in a position to win.

In the Cook Out 400, Gibbs picked up 25 points. Meanwhile, McDowell had just 15. AJ Allmendinger only put together a 10-point performance while Daniel Suárez really struggled and only grabbed four points.

If that keeps up, Gibbs will be in the playoffs when the regular season ends. However, a surprise winner outside of the top-16 would be detrimental to his progress. After McDowell, it’s a long way up to catch Bubba Wallace in 15th as he took a 54-point lead on the cutline after Richmond.

Ty Gibbs has the pit crew, he often has the speed, and he just needs the perfect race to do it at. If he can’t get a win, he might sneak his way in on points alone.
